2025 Top 1000 University Global Rankings: Nigeria Absent

Latest QS Rankings Released

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2025 have been published, featuring over 1,500 universities from 105 higher education systems worldwide, shows Nigeria absent from the top 1000 listing. The rankings highlight academic excellence, reputation, and global diversity among institutions.

Top Performers

The United States leads the rankings with 197 institutions, followed by the United Kingdom with 90, and mainland China with 71. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) maintains its top position for the 13th consecutive year. Imperial College London has risen to second place, while the University of Oxford and Harvard University hold the third and fourth spots, respectively. The University of Cambridge completes the top five.

Nigeria’s Representation

Nigeria, unfortunately, does not feature in the top 1000. The rankings place the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos between 1100-1200. This absence highlights the challenges faced by Nigerian universities in competing on a global scale.

African Universities in the Rankings

Other African universities have performed better in the rankings. The University of Cape Town leads the continent, ranking 171st globally. Several South African and Egyptian institutions also made the list, showcasing their strides in higher education.

Previous Recognitions

In 2In 2023, the Centre for World University Rankings recognised the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University among the best globally. The University of Ibadan was the highest-ranked Nigerian institution, placing 1,163rd.

Call for Improvement

The latest QS rankings underscore the need for Nigerian universities to improve their global standing. Enhanced funding, better infrastructure, and increased academic research are crucial for these institutions to climb the rankings and gain international recognition.
