36 State Speakers Agree to State Police Establishment

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, representing all 36 states, has thrown its weight behind the ongoing constitution review aimed at establishing state police. After their meeting in Abuja, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Conference Chairman and Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, signed a communique formalizing this pivotal decision. The Speakers expressed their preparedness to support the bill for state police creation once the National Assembly transmits it.

Emphasizing the urgency of addressing insecurity, the 36 State Speakers advocated for state police as a crucial measure. They stressed the importance of collaboration among the National Assembly, Presidency, and stakeholders during the constitution review process. While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, the Speakers highlighted adverse effects such as subsidy removal and exchange rate fluctuations, calling for sustainable solutions to alleviate citizen suffering. Furthermore, they urged strict compliance with constitutional provisions granting financial autonomy to state legislatures.

The Conference expressed concern over breaches in implementing financial autonomy for state legislatures and urged stakeholders to adhere strictly to constitutional provisions. Additionally, they called for a peaceful resolution of the political crisis in Rivers State, urging political leaders to seek amicable solutions through dialogue and negotiation. The Conference’s stance underscores their commitment to constitutional compliance and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, reflecting their dedication to upholding the rule of law and fostering unity and stability in Nigeria.
