Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made a startling announcement regarding the unearthing of 86 under-bridge houses at Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi. Tenants were renting these covert accommodations at an annual rate of N250,000. Wahab utilized his X account to share videos on Wednesday, unveiling the discovery of 86 partitioned rooms, varying in size from 10×10 to 12×10. He emphasized the successful removal of all structures, including a container utilized for illicit activities, by the enforcement team of Lagos State’s Ministry of Environment and Water Resources from beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge.
Wahab disclosed that following this revelation, authorities apprehended a total of 18 individuals for illegally squatting under the bridge. Furthermore, 86 rooms, partitioned into different dimensions, along with a container used for unlawful purposes, were identified and subsequently dismantled. Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, a Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the eviction of illegal settlers from beneath the bridge towards Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi. During the operation conducted by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as KAI, they arrested 23 individuals, highlighted Rotimi-Akodu. He emphasized the urgent need for the eviction, stressing the hazards posed by squatters who had established an illicit settlement under the bridge, potentially jeopardizing critical infrastructure. Rotimi-Akodu reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps to monitor the area and uphold the law, safeguarding the safety and well-being of residents in light of such illicit activities.
