Tension has escalated as Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) pickets on Labour party’s headquarters across the nation as part of their protest. In a dramatic turn of events, NLC has intensified its demand for the resignation of the national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure.
During the picketing at the Party’s headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku of NLC’s Political Commission spoke to the media.
He emphasized that the picketing aimed to express the grievances of workers regarding Abure’s administration of the party.
One of the key points of contention raised by the NLC was the alleged unilateral convocation of a national convention by Abure without prior consultation with relevant stakeholders. This move by Abure was strongly criticized by the NLC, sparking further tensions between the two organizations.
Comrade Bello Ismail, the acting General Secretary of NLC, voiced concerns about the lack of inclusivity in the convention planning process. Consequently, he highlighted the importance of an all-inclusive convention that involves all stakeholders, including workers, youths, and other relevant groups.
The NLC opposed Abure’s alleged attempt to handpick party officers, insisting on democratic norms and transparency in party affairs. They called for a convention where all stakeholders have a voice and participate actively, without the influence of monetary considerations.
Responding to the NLC’s actions, the Labour Party’s National Working Committee condemned the picketing, labeling it as unlawful and destructive. Moreover, the party expressed disappointment in the NLC’s President, Joe Ajaero, accusing him of pursuing personal interests at the expense of the party’s integrity.
Labour Party reiterated its commitment to independence and challenged the NLC’s claim of ownership, citing membership criteria and constitutional provisions. The party emphasized the need for adherence to democratic principles and fair processes in determining the party’s leadership and direction.
The NLC and Labour Party’s standoff intensifies, impacting both organizations and the political scene significantly. The developments in this leadership dispute will be closely watched.
