The clamor for state police is gaining momentum across Nigeria, with significant progress reported on the implementation front. Consequently, the National Economic Council (NEC) is set to reconvene later this month to discuss the latest developments, according to sources close to the matter. This upcoming meeting highlights the government’s proactive approach to addressing the call for enhanced local law enforcement.

Presidential Consensus on State Police

Following President Bola Tinubu’s meeting with state governors last February, they reached a pivotal agreement with the Federal Government to explore the establishment of state police units. This consensus marks a significant step towards addressing national security challenges. Consequently, this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to enhancing law enforcement across the nation.This initiative aimed to address the country’s escalating security challenges, particularly in combating banditry and protecting agricultural interests.

NEC’s Role and Governors’ Support

At the 140th NEC meeting held at the Aso Rock Villa on March 21, reports from 16 state governors expressing support for establishing state police were received. These governors also recommended constitutional amendments to facilitate the smooth establishment of state police forces, signalling a crucial step forward in the process.

Growing Consensus Among States

Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson for the Vice President and NEC, revealed that additional states had submitted reports, showing a growing consensus towards implementing state police. Although he did not share specifics about the contributing states, he expects to present more comprehensive details at the upcoming NEC meeting.

NEC’s Function and Membership

NEC, established under the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, serves as a vital platform for advising the President on economic affairs and coordinating economic planning efforts among the various levels of government. The push for state police gained further traction with a bill proposing its establishment passing the second reading in the House of Representatives on February 20. Acknowledging the pivotal role of state governors in determining the success of state police initiatives, the Presidency highlighted ongoing efforts to empower existing security apparatuses such as forest guards. The directive to strengthen these units with proper training and equipment underscores the multi-pronged approach towards bolstering security nationwide.

Proactive Moves by State Governments

State governments have responded proactively to the call for enhanced security measures. In Ogun State, plans are underway to recruit 500 armed forest guards to safeguard farmers and combat banditry. Similarly, in Plateau, Ekiti, Kebbi, and other states, it will be replicated reflecting a concerted effort to fortify security infrastructure.
