A Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has summoned five social media users for alleged “criminal defamation” against gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa. Presided over by Emmanuel Iyanna, the court issued the summons dated April 3, 2024, instructing the defendants to appear in person on April 23, 2024.
After Uzochikwa and Mercy Chinwo’s post, defendants accused of defamatory actions face legal repercussions. Consequently, legal action stemmed from the defendants’ comments, tarnishing the reputation of Uzochikwa and Mercy Chinwo.
The defendants named in the case are Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, DJ Spoiltkid, Terrence Ekot, and Samuel Agozie. Consequently, their alleged actions have sparked legal proceedings highlighting the consequences of defamation on social media platforms. This led to a cascade of defamatory comments, implicating Bassey falsely and causing uproar on social media.
The legal action was initiated by Blessed Uzochikwa, who filed a direct criminal complaint through his lawyers, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi. The complaint alleges that the defendants’ actions tarnished his and Mercy Chinwo’s reputation.
Nathaniel Bassey’s plea to the Inspector-General of Police amplified scrutiny on the matter.
