In light of ongoing renovation work on its main chambers, the National Assembly has announced a further postponement of plenary resumption to April 30. This delay, initially scheduled for April 23 after the Easter and Eid recess, aims to facilitate the completion of the renovation process.
The decision to postpone plenary was communicated by the Clerk of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, who informed lawmakers that the resumption would now take place on April 30 at 11 am in the main chamber. This rescheduling affects both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with lawmakers reconvening in their respective chambers upon resumption.
Rotimi, citing Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the Clerk of the House of Representatives, conveyed in an internal communication to Honourable Members on Wednesday. The extension aims to afford Members more time for constituency outreach to gather sufficient input for the constitution review process.
The statement read, “The extension follows the earlier decision by the House Committee on Constitution Review to extend the deadline for submission of memoranda to April 30, 2024.”
The renovation work, initiated in July 2022 by the Visible Construction Company Nigeria Limited, prompted both houses to relocate to temporary chambers in September 2022. The extension of the renovation timeline necessitates the postponement of plenary to ensure the completion of the renovation work.
