The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reopens Runway 18L/36R at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos after it was temporarily closed due to a Dana Air plane skidding off the runway on Tuesday.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, stated that flight operations resumed at 19:58hrs on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to inform the public and all stakeholders that Runway 18L/36R has been reopened for flight operations,” the statement stated.
The closure resulted from a Dana Air aircraft incident; registration number 5N-BKI overshot the runway during landing. FAAN’s emergency response team swiftly evacuated and recovered the aircraft, followed by thorough clearing operations to ensure flight safety.
Orah clarified that both the FAAN Operations Division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency inspected the runway for safe resumption.
They meticulously cleaned the area, facilitating the swift resumption of operations on Runway 18L/36R, minimizing disruption to flight schedules.
Orah extended apologies for any inconvenience caused, reiterating FAAN’s commitment to prioritizing safety and security.
“FAAN extends gratitude to the travelling public, our airline partners, and all stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure,” the statement concluded.
The reopening signifies a significant step towards restoring normalcy to operations at Murtala Muhammed Airport, underscoring FAAN’s dedication to ensuring a safe and efficient air transport environment for all passengers and users.
