Former Governor of Benue State and current Senator representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, Gabriel Suswam, has launched scathing criticism against the current Nigerian leadership, particularly President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Newsnight programme, Suswam asserted that the country’s leadership lacks the capability to navigate Nigeria out of the economic turmoil inherited from the previous administration under Muhammadu Buhari.
Suswam pinpointed several policy decisions initiated by the Tinubu government, including the removal of petrol subsidy, floating of the naira, and increases in electricity tariffs, as evidence of the administration’s failure to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians. He argued that these policies have only exacerbated the plight of the masses, leading to heightened inflation and economic instability.
Suswam expressed dismay at the state of the nation, highlighting the detrimental impact of current economic policies on Nigerians. He criticized the decision to remove subsidies, stating it directly affects transportation and production costs, burdening consumers with increased prices.
Moreover, Suswam criticized the decision to float the currency, citing historical precedents where such measures have failed in developing economies. He refutes claims that the economic woes were inherited, insisting the current leadership must take responsibility for its policy failures.
Transitioning to the internal dynamics of his own party, Suswam addressed the leadership crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Despite acknowledging existing challenges, he remained optimistic about the PDP’s potential.
He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to regain its former glory and offer a credible alternative to the ruling party.
Suswam stressed his unwavering commitment to the PDP, citing his longstanding affiliation with the party since its inception. Confident in his capability to guide the party, he draws on his vast experience and understanding of its dynamics.
In conclusion, Senator Gabriel Suswam’s candid remarks shed light on the pressing issues facing Nigeria’s political and economic landscape. Suswam, advocating change in his party and nationwide, remains prominent, pushing for accountability, transparency, and opposition party revitalization.
