The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) expressed concern over the unprecedented challenges faced by students due to the surge in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and its scarcity. President Abbas Ojo called on the Federal Government to urgently address the issues and threatened street protests if the situation persisted. Reports indicated queues at filling stations in Ogun and Lagos states, with some stations closed. PMS, priced between N700 and N800 per litre, has led to increased transport fares.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited cited supply issues for the queues and urged patience from customers. Residents like Tomisin Bakare expressed shock at the high fuel prices, exacerbating the already long wait times. According to Ojo, the situation is similar in Osun, with bus drivers raising fares, and students can no longer bear the economic burden imposed by government policies.
Since May 29, 2023, President Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy worsened economic conditions, impacting citizens with rising expenses. Despite adversity, students at Obafemi Awolowo University persevere, but fuel shortages have left them in a challenging situation. The student union demands swift government action to address fuel scarcity and stabilize prices to protect academic pursuits. Failure to meet demands within 48 hours could lead to street protests to safeguard students’ academic endeavors.
The removal of fuel subsidy has exacerbated existing economic woes, prompting the student union to call for immediate government intervention. With the persistence of fuel shortages and unpredictable price fluctuations, students find themselves grappling with increased transportation costs and logistical challenges. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the union’s ultimatum underscores the importance of addressing fuel scarcity promptly to safeguard the academic pursuits of students at Obafemi Awolowo University.
