Military Withdrawal from Okuama- Oborevwori announces

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State announces the complete withdrawal of the military from Okuama community during a press conference at the Government House in Asaba. This announcement signifies the approval for Okuama’s displaced residents to return home. Governor Oborevwori disclosed that an operational Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp facilitates their resettlement. Established by his administration, the camp aims to aid Okuama’s displaced population. The military’s presence in Okuama ensued after the tragic killing of 17 Army personnel on March 14, 2024. The incident, occurring in the riverine community of Ughelli South Local Government Area, caused widespread displacement. As a result, many residents sought refuge in neighboring communities and creeks.

The military later buried the 17 personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, at the Military Cemetery. Governor Oborevwori’s announcement anticipates that the people will gradually start returning home to rebuild their community.

Governor Oborevwori thanked Mr. President, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Nigerian Army for facilitating the military’s withdrawal. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians, traditional rulers, and other leaders for their support. His statement acknowledged the understanding and cooperation of key stakeholders in resolving the situation in Okuama. Governor Oborevwori appreciated the collaborative efforts that led to the withdrawal of military personnel.
