Wilson’s Controversial Comparison
Nigerians flocked to Twitter, as they demand seriously for an apology from British journalist Christopher Wilson for his Nazi comparison of Nigerians. The controversial comment came after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Nigeria visit, sparking significant outrage. Wilson’s now-deleted post on X, comparing Nigerians to Nazis, faced widespread condemnation and backlash.
Offensive Post and Immediate Backlash
On Tuesday, Wilson posted that Nigeria’s human rights record was comparable to Nazi Germany’s, drawing a parallel to the Duke of Windsor’s 1937 tour of Germany with Wallis Simpson. This post, which has since been deleted, ignited anger and criticism among Nigerians and other users of the platform. The backlash was immediate and intense, with many users expressing their outrage.
Justification Falls Flat
Wilson defended his remark by citing a 2023 report from the US Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour. The report highlighted human rights abuses in Nigeria, including extrajudicial killings, torture, harsh prison conditions, and arbitrary arrests. However, this justification did little to quell the outrage, as many found his comparison highly inappropriate.
Calls for a Proper Apology
Following the negative reactions to his Nazi comment, Wilson attempted to clarify his intention, stating that he deleted the post because it caused unanticipated offense. Despite this, many Nigerians found his response inadequate and continued to demand a proper apology. Users expressed their dismay, calling his comparison offensive and urging him to offer a sincere apology.
