Benue State Bans Public Events After 10 PM

Benue State Imposes Nighttime Restrictions

Benue State has introduced a new regulation that bans all forms of public events, including wakes beyond 10 PM. This directive, signed by Governor Hyacinth Alia, also prohibits farming on unfenced plots and undeveloped government areas. The aim is to tackle criminal activities and political violence.

New Public Order Measures in Benue

Governor Hyacinth Alia has enacted an executive order to improve public order in Benue State. This order, part of a broader strategy, aims to address issues such as kidnappings, murders, and local militia activity. The Department of Public Order, within the Ministry of Justice, will oversee the implementation of these measures.

Public Order and Safety

The executive order also includes prohibitions on various activities. These include disobedience to traffic rules, child labour, and prostitution. Additionally, acts like dumping refuse on roads, open defecation, and hawking by the roadside are banned. Governor Alia emphasized that strict adherence to these laws is essential for maintaining public order.

Enforcement and Penalties

During the announcement at the Government House in Makurdi, Governor Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Odeh, highlighted the penalties for violating these rules. Offenders could face fines ranging from N20,000 to N500,000 or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offence.

Regulations on Public Gatherings

The governor also stated that any public gatherings, including rallies and wakes, must not extend beyond 10 PM without a permit from the Department of Public Order. This measure is designed to prevent disturbances and maintain peace within the state.

Committees for Public Order

To ensure effective enforcement, a Public Order Advisory Committee and local Public Order Committees have been established. These bodies will collaborate with stakeholders to uphold and advise on public order policies, ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
