UI Queries Students Over Fee Hike Protest

The University of Ibadan (UI) management in Oyo State has issued formal queries to two students for their involvement in a recent protest against the fee hike. Olamide Iyanuoluwa and Aduwo Ayodele now face possible suspension for participating in the fee hike demonstration at the university.

Threat of Suspension from Management

A memo dated May 24, 2024, warned students about the consequences of not responding promptly to queries. Moreover, signed by Deputy Registrar (Students) T.I Musa, the memo stated that failure to provide supporting documents could lead to suspension. Additionally, the university stressed the importance of addressing the issue within the specified timeframe. Immediate compliance was required to avoid severe disciplinary measures. Furthermore, the memo highlighted the urgency and gravity of the matter.

Arrests During the Protest

On May 13, 2024, the Nigerian Army arrested four individuals, including Olamide and Aduwo, during the university’s fee hike protest. The demonstration reportedly disrupted the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Students’ Union administration.

Allegations Outlined in Memo

The memo accused students of gross misconduct, citing their actions of carrying placards with inflammatory messages against the fee hike. The university management described these actions as disrespectful, particularly in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor and other senior officials.

48-Hour Response Deadline

The university gave students a 48-hour deadline to defend themselves and explain why they should not face disciplinary actions. The memo emphasized that failing to respond or providing false information could lead to the automatic suspension of their studentship.
