Kano Mosque Bombing Death Toll Rises to 21

Tragic Increase in Casualties

The Kano mosque bombing which saw the death of about 17 persons as reported on the 21st of May has risen to 21, following the death of additional persons from those injured, on Thursday.

Attack and Immediate Aftermath

The attack injured 25 worshippers during the early morning. Initially, one person died on the day of the bombing, but since then, 20 more have succumbed to their injuries at the Muhammed Specialists Hospital in Kano. Currently, only four survivors remain hospitalized.

Community Support and Response

Alhaji Bature AbdulAziz, Chairman of Friends of the Hospital, shared this update during a sympathy visit by the Kano Business Community to the remaining victims. AbdulAziz commended the hospital’s management for their medical care and thanked the community and various donors for their support.

Incident Details and Investigation

Shafi’u Abubakar, a 38-year-old man, carried out the bombing using a locally-fabricated bomb. His attack caused numerous injuries and sparked a widespread outcry. Abubakar later explained that his actions stemmed from a prolonged family dispute over inheritance.

Legal Proceedings

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has ordered the prosecution of the bombing mastermind. The suspect, arraigned on charges of grievous hurt and culpable homicide, appeared before an Upper Shari’a Court in Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, on May 21.

Government and Community Reactions

The Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, confirmed that the suspect attacked the mosque during the dawn prayer. The Governor vowed to sign the death warrant if the court convicts the suspect, emphasizing the state’s commitment to justice.
