NLC’s Conviction
The NLC believes Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi will not support Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman. Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, revealed this conviction in a recent interview.
Denial of Endorsement
Ndubuaku dismissed claims that the union had resolved its differences with Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC). This statement came after Obi’s camp denied the former Anambra State governor endorsed the Abure-led NWC following their contentious convention.
Rising Tensions
Tensions between the party leadership and Obi’s camp have escalated recently. Obi’s campaign team clarified that he visited the LP secretariat to reconcile, not endorse, contrary to some media reports.
Ndubuaku’s Comments
Ndubuaku stressed that Abure is stalling, asserting Obi would never endorse him given the dubious circumstances of his return. “The Peter Obi we know cannot endorse Abure in this situation,” Ndubuaku stated. “You can’t criticize someone’s actions and still endorse them; it’s wrong.”
Obi’s Stand
Ndubuaku recounted a meeting with Obi, where the latter clarified there was no endorsement. Obi’s spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, also denied the endorsement claims after Obi’s visit to the secretariat. Obi seeks to foster peace within the party but is concerned about Abure’s performance.
Future Actions
If Obi calls for a meeting, it will involve the genuine party members and those who have assumed leadership. Ndubuaku believes this is necessary to challenge the current leadership and reposition the party.
