Flight Disruptions Hit Eagles’ Camp
The Super Eagles preparations for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers have hit a snag as the ongoing strike leaves eight key players stranded in Lagos and Abuja. The ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress has halted domestic flights, leaving players unable to reach the camp in Uyo.
Players Struggle to Join Camp
Defenders Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Calvin Bassey, along with midfielder Frank Onyeka and forward Paul Onuachu, are among those affected. Although these players are already in the country, they find themselves unable to travel from Lagos and Abuja to Uyo.
Training Continues with Limited Squad
Despite the disruptions, 15 players have managed to gather in Uyo and participated in Monday morning’s training session. Head coach Finidi George emphasised the importance of securing the three points in the upcoming match against South Africa.
Efforts to Resolve the Situation
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is working tirelessly to resolve the travel issues. Meanwhile, NFF’s Director of Media and Communications, Ademola Olajire, mentioned that the affected players are making every effort to join the rest of the team.
Awaiting Full Team
In addition to the quintet, goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, forward Ademola Lookman, and midfielder Alex Iwobi are expected to arrive in Uyo soon. New media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed that these players have landed in Nigeria but are also facing travel challenges due to the strike.
Upcoming Fixtures
The Super Eagles are set to face South Africa on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Following this, the team will travel to Ivory Coast to play against Benin Republic on Monday. With critical World Cup qualifying points at stake, the team hopes to have a full squad ready for these crucial matches.
