Labour Party Works to Resolve Edo Crisis Ahead of Election

Consultation Begins

The Labour Party has initiated consultations to address the ongoing crisis within its Edo State chapter as the September 21 governorship election approaches. Party leaders described the conflict as a “family affair,” assuring that it remains under control.

Leadership Clash

The crisis in Edo’s Labour Party reached a peak last Friday when two party leaders both claimed to be the legitimate chairman at an INEC stakeholders’ meeting. Elizabeth Ativie, recently appointed caretaker committee chairman by the national leadership, and Kelly Ogbaloi, a member of the dissolved committee, both asserted their authority.

Suspension and Misconduct

In response to the confusion, the state party suspended Ativie for alleged gross misconduct and insubordination. The decision was made during a State Working Committee meeting attended by local government chairmen and secretaries of the party.

Efforts to Resolve

Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed that steps are being taken to resolve the internal conflict. He expressed confidence that the situation would not hinder the campaign of their governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata.

Strong Campaign Continues

Ifoh highlighted Akpata’s strong candidacy and widespread support in Edo State. He assured that despite the leadership tussle, the campaign remains robust and unaffected. The party believes Akpata’s qualifications and organic followership position him as a frontrunner.

Unity and Confidence

Kennedy Ahanotu, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, echoed these sentiments. He emphasised that internal disputes are normal in any organisation and that the party remains united. Ahanotu expressed optimism about Labour Party’s chances in the upcoming election, stressing that the focus remains on their capable candidate.
