Imo CAN Chairman Criticises NLC’s Minimum Wage Demands

Economic Impact Concerns

Revd Eches Divine Eches, Chairman of the Imo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has criticised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for its minimum wage demands. He argued that the NLC’s push for a N494,000 minimum wage is unrealistic and could harm the Nigerian economy.

Feasibility Issues

Eches, also the chairman of the TEKAN/ECWA fellowship in the South-East, questioned the feasibility of such a high minimum wage. He asked if NLC President Joe Ajaero truly believes that states like Imo can sustain such wages without financial collapse. He urged both the NLC and the Federal Government to engage in open dialogue to prevent economic damage.

Comparisons to Hyperinflation

Eches compared the NLC’s demands to situations in Venezuela and Zimbabwe, where hyperinflation caused severe economic issues. He noted that increasing the minimum wage by 1500 percent is impractical given Nigeria’s current revenue status.

Strike Frequency Criticised

The religious leader highlighted Ajaero’s history of calling frequent strikes, suggesting that such actions could further destabilise the economy. He stressed that any fight for workers’ rights should be conducted with consideration for the nation’s well-being.

Private Sector Challenges

Eches pointed out that even the organised private sector cannot meet the NLC’s wage demands. He aligned with the government’s stance on starting with a manageable wage increase and gradually improving it.

Call for Rational Demands

In conclusion, Eches urged the NLC to make realistic demands that do not jeopardise the economy. He questioned the logic behind Ajaero’s demands and warned against actions that could lead to national strife instead of progress.
