Israeli Air Strike on Gaza UN Shelter Kills 27

Tragic Attack on UN School

An Israeli air strike has killed at least 27 people at a UN school in Gaza, which was sheltering hundreds of displaced individuals. Local officials reported that the attack targeted the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. This tragedy has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters.

Israeli Military’s Statement

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the air strike, stating it targeted a Hamas compound within the UN school. According to local journalists, two missiles were fired at classrooms on the top floor. The Hamas media office has vehemently accused Israel of committing a “horrific massacre” against innocent civilians.

Immediate Aftermath

Rescue teams and ambulances swiftly transported the wounded and deceased to nearby hospitals. Social media footage revealed the devastating impact, showing destroyed classrooms and bodies wrapped in shrouds. An injured woman expressed the community’s grief and anger, lamenting the loss of children who were sleeping during the attack.

Denial from Hamas

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the Hamas media office, rejected Israel’s claims that the UN school housed a Hamas command post. He accused Israel of fabricating stories to justify the attack. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintained that the strike was a precise operation targeting Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists involved in previous attacks on Israel.

Escalating Violence

Since the conflict began, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports over 36,580 fatalities. The IDF stated that measures were taken to minimise civilian casualties, but the scale of destruction and loss of life has drawn severe criticism. Earlier, the IDF announced operational control over parts of the Bureij refugee camp and Deir al-Balah, intensifying bombardments in central Gaza.

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) described the situation in Deir al-Balah’s al-Aqsa hospital as “apocalyptic,” with at least 70 bodies, mostly women and children, brought in since Tuesday. As the conflict continues, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with hospitals overwhelmed and thousands of families displaced.
