Cholera Crisis in Nigeria
As Nigeria grapples with a cholera outbreak affecting 30 states, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday in Lagos State. The meeting aimed to coordinate a joint response to the escalating health crisis.
Latest Cholera Statistics
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported over 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cholera cases, resulting in more than 30 deaths between January 1 and June 11, 2024. Lagos State alone recorded 350 suspected cases, with 17 confirmed and 15 fatalities, particularly concentrated in the Island area.
Concerns for NYSC Camps
Medical experts have raised alarms about potential cholera outbreaks in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps, which open on June 26, 2024. In particular, Professor Kayode Osagbemi from the University of Ilorin stressed the importance of maintaining clean water supplies and proper sanitation to prevent the spread of the disease among corps members.
Preventive Measures Urged
Public health specialist Dr Laz Eze highlighted the need for proper education on water hygiene, sanitation, and hand hygiene in NYSC camps. Furthermore, he recommended ensuring safe drinking water, clean toilets, and proper waste disposal to prevent cholera. Similarly, Dr Lekan Adelakun echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for thorough health and hygiene protocols in the camps.
FCTA Sensitises Schools
In the Federal Capital Territory, the Secondary Education Board has taken proactive steps to prevent cholera in schools. Director Sani Ladan outlined measures including sanitation protocols, monitoring of food vendors, and provision of hand washing facilities to ensure a clean environment for students.
Ondo State’s Response
Ondo State has activated its surveillance system to combat cholera. Moreover, Health Commissioner Dr Banji Ajaka announced that safety measures are in place, including an emergency preparedness committee to oversee sanitation, potable water provision, and strengthening of health institutions.
