Seoul Considers Arming Kyiv
Vladimir Putin warns South Korea, cautioning that it would be “a big mistake” to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine. This statement follows Seoul’s contemplation of arming Kyiv in response to a new defence pact between Russia and North Korea. Putin’s remarks were made during a press briefing in Vietnam on Thursday, highlighting potential repercussions for South Korea if it proceeds with its arms support plan.
Russian Threats to South Korea
In his warning, Putin suggested that Moscow would take actions displeasing to South Korea’s current leadership if it decides to provide arms to Ukraine. This threat came shortly after Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, where he signed a mutual defence agreement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This agreement has raised alarms in Seoul, with national security adviser Chang Ho-jin indicating that South Korea might reconsider its stance on arms support for Ukraine.
South Korea’s Response to Putin’s Remarks
Following Putin’s comments, South Korea’s presidential office announced on Friday that it is considering “various options” regarding arms support to Ukraine. The decision, according to Seoul, will depend on Russia’s approach to the issue. Additionally, authorities plan to summon Russia’s ambassador to lodge a formal protest, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Humanitarian Aid and Military Equipment
To date, South Korea has provided humanitarian aid and non-lethal military equipment to Ukraine, adhering to its policy of not supplying arms to countries engaged in active conflict. However, the deepening military collaboration between Russia and North Korea is prompting some in Ukraine to hope for a shift in Seoul’s policy. Analysts believe that Kyiv might leverage Putin’s visit to Pyongyang to increase pressure on South Korea.
International Reactions
The Russian-North Korean agreement has drawn criticism from various quarters. US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed concern, stating that the pact should worry any country committed to peace and stability. Meanwhile, Japan’s government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi condemned the agreement, calling it “unacceptable” and expressing serious concern over potential military technology cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
Regional Tensions Escalate
Analysts warn that the defence treaty between Russia and North Korea could have significant global and regional implications. Consequently, the potential for North Korea to openly arm Russia and for Russia to intervene in conflicts on the Korean peninsula poses a serious threat. Furthermore, tensions have already escalated, evidenced by incidents of North Korean troops briefly crossing the border into South Korea, which prompted a strong response from Seoul.
