Liberian President Cuts Salary by 40%

Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai announced a significant salary reduction, slashing his pay by 40%. This bold move aims to set a new standard for responsible governance and show solidarity with the Liberian people.

Addressing Economic Pressures

President Boakai’s office emphasised the need for this reduction amidst rising scrutiny of government salaries. Many Liberians struggle with the high cost of living, with one in five living on less than $2 a day. By cutting his annual salary from $13,400 to $8,000, Boakai hopes to alleviate some of these economic pressures.

Echoing Past Leadership

This decision mirrors a similar move by Boakai’s predecessor, George Weah, who reduced his salary by 25%. While some Liberians praise Boakai’s decision, others question its true impact due to the additional benefits he receives. These benefits include daily allowances and medical cover, leading to doubts about the overall significance of the salary cut.

Support from Transparency Advocates

Anderson D. Miamen from the Centre of Transparency and Accountability in Liberia welcomed the president’s pay cut. Furthermore, he expressed hope that the public would see the positive impact of these deductions on their lives. Similarly, W. Lawrence Yealue II, a government transparency advocate, commended the decision and urged reviewing presidential benefits in the next budget.

Strengthening Civil Service

Beyond his salary cut, President Boakai has pledged to empower Liberia’s Civil Service Agency. He aims to ensure public servants receive fair compensation, reinforcing his commitment to tackling corruption and financial mismanagement.

A New Era of Governance

Since taking office in January after defeating George Weah, Boakai has focused on transparency. He declared his assets and ordered an audit of the presidential office, though results are pending. His administration strengthened the General Auditing Commission and Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission to address past allegations of corruption and lavish spending. This effort aims to restore public trust and improve living standards in Liberia.
