Tragic Assault in Agatu
Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on the Olegumachi community in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, claiming the lives of at least 10 individuals. This recent attack exacerbates the ongoing security challenges in the region.
Details of the Attack
On Tuesday evening, the attackers stormed Olegumachi, killing residents and setting ablaze multiple houses. This violent incident follows a separate attack in nearby Ikpele, resulting in three deaths, including that of an elderly couple.
Local Government Confirms Casualties
Phillip Ebenyakwu, the Chairman of the Agatu Local Government, confirmed the casualties and property damage. “Ten people were tragically killed and seven houses destroyed,” he stated, underscoring the severe impact of the assault.
Weaponry and Looting Reported
The gunmen, equipped with sophisticated weaponry, engaged in looting and arson, contributing to the chaos and destruction. “They looted properties and livestock, leaving a trail of devastation,” Ebenyakwu added, describing the impact on the community.
Authorities Respond
The local government reported the incident to the police and the Department of State Security to initiate an immediate investigation. However, Police Public Relations Officer Catherine Anene noted she has not yet received the report from Agatu’s Divisional Police Officer. This delay raises concerns about communication and response times in crisis situations.
Community in Mourning
As the community mourns and grapples with the aftermath, there is an urgent call for increased security measures and support. Repeated attacks have instilled fear and uncertainty among residents, emphasizing the need for effective interventions. These measures are crucial to prevent further violence and reassure the community.
