Lagos Monthly Sanitation False, Government Denies

No Reintroduction of Sanitation Restriction

The Lagos State Government, represented by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, has officially refuted rumors suggesting the reintroduction of monthly environmental sanitation and associated movement restrictions starting in July, labeling these claims as false and the product of mischief makers.

Government’s Response to Viral Fake News

Kunle Adeshina, the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, issued a statement advising residents to ignore the viral fake news. He urged the public to continue with their daily activities without worrying about movement restrictions. This guidance specifically applies to the last Saturday of July and any other dates incorrectly mentioned. The announcement aims to clarify misinformation and ensure residents are not misled by false claims.

Clarifications from Commissioner Wahab

Commissioner Wahab explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu introduced a new initiative at a sanitation sensitisation event involving weekly community engagement. This program encourages residents to actively participate in cleaning their environments. State officials will set an example by joining these efforts, promoting voluntary participation. The initiative does not impose any formal restrictions, focusing instead on communal responsibility and awareness.

No Official Changes to Sanitation Policy

Wahab emphasized that the state government has not announced any changes to the existing sanitation policies that would affect the daily lives of the citizens. He reassured that all statements suggesting a reinstatement of the old monthly sanitation day with movement restrictions are entirely baseless.

Promoting Continuous Community Involvement

The Lagos State Government is focusing on promoting regular voluntary cleanliness and environmental awareness among its residents. The aim is to foster a culture of continuous care for the surroundings without waiting for a government-mandated day or restrictions, which aligns with modern environmental management practices.
