Nationwide Call for Change: Nigerians Unite in Protest

Organisers Announce Nationwide Protests for Early August

Amid escalating concerns over governance and living conditions, organisers from various groups have revealed call for a nationwide change in the unbearable cost of living in Nigeria, via a protest scheduled for August 1. These groups, which include movements like Concerned Nigerians and Nigerians Against Hunger, aim to address issues of hardship, hunger, and poor governance that have plagued the nation.

Diverse Groups Demand Government Accountability

The planned protests have unified at least 26 groups, who have collectively written to 20 state governments requesting the use of public spaces to express their grievances. This move underscores a widespread demand for substantial government action to improve the socio-economic conditions in Nigeria.

Key Locations and Figures Leading the Protest

Prominent figures such as Omoyele Sowore of the Revolution Now Movement have been vocal in mobilising citizens. Protest organizers plan to hold events across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory, covering major areas including Lagos, Kano, and Enugu, to draw attention to the country’s governance issues.

Government Responses and Calls for Peace

In anticipation of the protests, various governmental figures have responded with calls for peace and dialogue. However, there remains a strong resolve among the organisers to proceed with their demonstrations, citing their constitutional right to assembly and protest.

Security Preparations and Legal Battles Loom

As tension mounts, authorities such as the Inspector General of Police are heightening security measures by setting guidelines for the protests to ensure they remain peaceful. Simultaneously, some groups have reported punitive measures such as account freezing by state authorities, leading to threats of legal action.
