Upcoming Edo Election: Shaibu Supports APC Candidacy

Philip Shaibu, recently declared his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in the upcoming September 21 Edo governorship election. This endorsement came during his speech at the Afemai World Congress in Detroit, Michigan, underscoring his commitment to party unity despite previous tensions with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Shaibu Puts Governorship Ambitions on Hold

Amid accusations against Governor Obaseki of thwarting his gubernatorial dreams, Shaibu announced he would delay his ambitions, choosing instead to back Okpebholo. He believes Okpebholo will perform better than Asue Ighodalo, the candidate supported by Obaseki from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Shaibu remarked on his resilience despite the political struggles, including an impeachment which he overcame, reinstating his position as deputy governor.

Age and Future Political Prospects

During his address, Shaibu highlighted his youthful advantage in politics, expressing optimism about his future gubernatorial prospects. “We are still young. If God says I will be governor, then I will be,” he stated, showcasing his hope and determination for future political opportunities.

Engaging the Diaspora in Nigerian Politics

Shaibu’s speech also included a call to the Nigerian diaspora to take an active interest in the country’s politics, particularly in who becomes the next governor of Edo State. He emphasized the significant impact the diaspora could have on election outcomes, urging them to support good governance and help steer the state towards progress.

APC’s Fresh Perspective in Edo State

The Deputy Governor praised Senator Okpebholo as a “breath of fresh air” within the political landscape of Edo State. He commended Okpebholo’s straightforward approach to politics, highlighting his ability to act more than he speaks, which has resonated well with the public and led to his historical victory in Edo Central.
