Calls for Economic Reforms: OPC’s Demands to President Tinubu

OPC Advocates for Economic Dialogue

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) urges dialogue between government leaders before the planned protests against economic reforms in Nigeria. On Tuesday, OPC President Otunba Wasiu Afolabi released a statement emphasizing the need for discussions to reverse recent hikes in electricity tariffs. The statement also called for reductions in food and fuel prices to alleviate economic pressures.

Immediate Actions Suggested by OPC

The OPC urged President Bola Tinubu to swiftly implement measures easing economic strain as a gesture of goodwill. They recommended issuing an Executive Order to open borders in the South-West and South-South to boost food inflow. This action could significantly reduce market prices by improving food availability.

Stance on National Refineries and Economic Manipulations

The OPC highlighted the need for operational national refineries to tackle the ongoing issue of costly petroleum products. Otunba Afolabi voiced frustration with the maintenance issues of Nigeria’s refineries since 1999. He urged the government to identify and arrest any cabals exacerbating these economic difficulties.

Call for Non-Violent Protests

While acknowledging the planned protests, the OPC advocated for a non-violent approach and encouraged protestors to seek dialogue. “A hungry man is an angry man,” stated Afolabi, stressing the need for peace and demonstrating governmental care for citizens’ welfare.

Responses from Civil Rights Groups

In light of the OPC’s demands, the Liberty Movement of Nigeria also voiced its perspective. The group’s convener, Olusola Edward, emphasized the effectiveness of dialogue over conflict and praised President Tinubu’s diplomatic handling of the recent minimum wage crisis as evidence of his commitment to not taking Nigerians for granted.

Security Preparations and Ongoing Tensions

As the nationwide protest nears, security agencies, including the police, military, and civil defence, have begun deploying officers across various states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to ensure public safety during the demonstrations. The anticipation of these events continues to build, with the hashtag “EndBadGovernanceInNigeria” gaining momentum on social platforms.
