Protesters Threaten Streets Protest in Lagos

Escalation in Protest Activities

Protesters in Lagos under the banner of #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria have issued a stern warning: if the government does not meet their demands, they plan to intensify their demonstrations starting Monday. The announcement came during a rally at Gani Fawehinmi Park, where Mr. Hassan Soweto, a key coordinator and member of the Youth Rights Campaign, addressed the crowd.

Defiance Against Court Orders

Despite a court order that limits protests to the park, demonstrators are prepared to defy this ruling. Soweto declared that unless the government responds positively by Sunday night, they will abandon the park and march through the streets, specifically targeting Alausa, the seat of Lagos government. This marks a significant shift from their previous strategy, potentially leading to larger disruptions.

A Day of Rest and Reflection

Interestingly, Soweto announced that there will be no protests on Sunday, urging participants to attend their places of worship and pray for peace in the country. This pause is seen as a moment for reflection before potentially more heated engagements begin.

Security Preparations and Community Impact

The police have taken measures to accommodate the protests while maintaining order, as observed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Police erected barricades along Ikorodu Road, allowing protesters to assemble while keeping other lanes open for regular traffic. The increased police presence, led by Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, underscores the seriousness with which authorities are preparing for the upcoming days.

Local Economy Adapting to Protests

Amidst the protests, life in Ojota is adapting. More shops have reopened, suggesting a return to normalcy in commercial activities. This resilience reflects the community’s ability to maintain economic functions even in times of social unrest.

Continued Vigilance by Law Enforcement

Despite the challenges, law enforcement maintained a controlled approach to the protests, resulting in no arrests on Friday. The police are also on high alert for any actions by hoodlums that might exploit the situation, as noted by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
