DSS Detains Protest Leader in Abuja Amid Rising Tensions

Early Morning Arrest

In a major intensification of the government’s clampdown, DSS operatives detained Micheal Lenin, a key figure in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. The arrest marks a significant move against the ongoing movement. The arrest occurred at approximately 2 AM on Monday at Lenin’s residence in the Apo district of Abuja. The DSS operation has stirred considerable controversy and concern among activist groups and citizens alike.

Allegations of Misconduct

Damilare Adenola reports that DSS agents raided Lenin’s home and allegedly assaulted him physically in front of his family. “During the raid, the DSS arrested and tortured Lenin,” reported Adenola, who called for his immediate and unconditional release. The DSS has yet to make an official comment on the incident, as spokesperson Peter Afunanya was unavailable for remarks.

Protest Leader’s Defiance

Before his arrest, Lenin, the National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s national address. He argued that the address showed a stark disconnect with the realities Nigerians face. At a press briefing, Lenin said, “The President’s justifications for state violence and dismissal of protesters’ demands in his first address have only deepened our resolve.” He emphasized that the government’s approach to the #EndBadGovernance protests has fueled their determination to continue.

Continued Calls for Protest

Despite his arrest, Lenin and his supporters continue to advocate for the ongoing protests, set to escalate across various locations on Monday. He calls on Nigerians to stand firm and participate in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of holding the government accountable and demanding substantial change.

Lenin specifically pointed out the ineffectiveness of the government’s attempts to quell the movement, highlighting that the use of force and propaganda has failed to silence the voices calling for reform. His statements underline the protesters’ resolve to persist until their demands are addressed.
