Disappointment in Presidential Response
The organising committee of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement, led by Hassan Taiwo, Ayoyinka Oni, and Adegboyega Adeniji, has expressed dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s delayed response to the ongoing protests. They have declared that demonstrations will continue at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, starting Monday. The committee criticized the President’s recent speech as an insufficient gesture that seemed more directed at discouraging the protests than addressing the issues raised.
Presidential Appeals Met With Skepticism
In his address, President Tinubu urged protesters to cease their demonstrations and engage in dialogue, emphasizing that he has heard their concerns “loud and clear.” However, the protest leaders viewed this appeal as contradictory, praising the movement’s impact while simultaneously challenging the spirit of genuine dialogue. The leaders argue that the President’s recognition of the protests came solely because of their seriousness and the widespread public support they garnered.
Mixed Messages Undermine Trust
The organisers pointed out that the President’s simultaneous call for dialogue and cessation of protests casts doubt on the sincerity of his intentions. This dual approach, they argue, does not foster a trustworthy atmosphere for genuine negotiation. It reflects a strategic move to quell dissent while appearing open to discussion.
Violence Against Protesters Post-Speech
Following the President’s speech, there were reports of thugs attacking peaceful protesters who had gathered for a Sunday morning worship session as part of their demonstration. This violence has prompted the protest leaders to seek support from major civil groups such as the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, and the Nigerian Bar Association, emphasizing the need for a united stand against such aggression.
Call for Increased Participation
Despite these challenges, the protest leaders are intensifying their call for broader participation. “We call on all Nigerian youth and the general populace to join us by 7 am tomorrow at Gani Fawehinmi Park for Day 5 of our ongoing protest,” stated Agho Omobude, Coordinator of the Edo State Civil Society Organisation. They urge a robust turnout to continue pressing for their demands and to demonstrate the strength of public resolve.
