Hunger Protests, ECOWAS Calls for Dialogue in Nigeria

ECOWAS Responds to Protests and Violence in Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing hunger protests in Nigeria, especially following incidents involving the display of the Russian flag and violent confrontations between security forces and protesters, as it calls for inclusive and constructive dialogue. These confrontations have resulted in the deaths of both protesters and security personnel, escalating tensions significantly.

Solidarity and Condolences

ECOWAS extended its deepest sympathies to the families of those who have lost loved ones during the unrest. In a formal statement, the organization expressed solidarity with the Nigerian people and government, reaffirming the right to peaceful protest as protected under the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the Nigerian Constitution of 1999.

Presidential Appeal for Peace

The commission praised Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his recent address to the nation, in which he called for dialogue to resolve the crisis. ECOWAS supports the President’s appeal, urging all parties involved to embrace inclusive dialogue as the pathway to peace and resolution of the underlying issues.

Urgent Call for Peaceful Resolution

With the situation growing increasingly volatile, ECOWAS has emphasized the need for an urgent and peaceful resolution to the conflicts. The organization highlighted that the stability of Nigeria is not only vital to its own citizens but also crucial for the peace and stability of the entire West African region.

Democracy and Governance

ECOWAS has called on all stakeholders to uphold democratic values and work collaboratively toward resolving the current challenges. The organization stressed that maintaining democratic processes is essential for the long-term peace and governance of the region.
