NLC Calls for Policies Reversal Amidst Hunger Protests

Labor Leaders Demand Change in Government Policy

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vocally criticized the Federal Government’s response to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. At an emergency meeting, NLC leaders denounced economic policies causing widespread hardship, demanding an immediate policy reversal.

Violent Clashes and Civil Unrest

Protests that started on August 1, 2024, have led to violent clashes between civilians and police, resulting in injuries and deaths. The NLC has voiced significant worries about the government’s harsh response to these peaceful protests. They urge the government to adopt a more balanced and fair approach.

Government Policies Under Scrutiny

The NLC criticized specific economic policies advised by international bodies like the World Bank and the IMF, labeling them as “anti-poor.” These policies, according to the NLC, have exacerbated the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers and the broader populace.

Call for Justice and Accountability

In addition to demanding policy changes, the NLC has called for a National Day of Mourning to honor the victims of the protests and is pushing for an independent investigation into the actions leading to civilian harm.

Dialogue and Negotiation Proposed

The NLC is urging the Federal Government to engage in meaningful dialogue with protest representatives, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to resolve the crisis. They warn that without constructive dialogue, further actions may be necessary to protect the safety of their members.

Government’s Response to NLC Concerns

Amidst these tensions, the NLC has also highlighted government interference in labor matters, particularly criticizing the actions of the Minister of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions. They demand the withdrawal of what they perceive as politically motivated actions against the labor movement.
