Abia to Increase Nurses’ Retirement Age to 65

Extended Retirement Age for Nurses

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced at a Umuahia press briefing plans to raise the retirement age for nurses to 65. This policy, extending nurses’ working years from 60 to 65, is aimed at enhancing the healthcare sector. It forms part of a wider initiative prioritizing healthcare revitalization under his administration. The extension mirrors a similar policy adjustment previously made for teachers, aiming to retain experienced healthcare professionals within the state.

Development of a Medical City

Governor Otti announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art medical city in Abia, set to be a signature project. A committee has been formed and a location identified for this ambitious initiative. The state government will collaborate with Extended Hands and Lifted Hands organisations to realize this vision.

Boosting Local Health Services

The medical city aims to reverse the trend of medical tourism by enhancing local medical services and facilities. “The whole idea is to turn medical tourists into visitors to Abia,” stated Governor Otti, highlighting the project’s potential to improve healthcare availability and quality within the state.

Financial Strategy and State Health

Governor Otti took the opportunity to discuss the state’s financial health, emphasizing that his administration has managed to avoid borrowing. However, he acknowledged that his administration is considering offers from entities like the African Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank Group, which provide generous terms to support future projects.

Agricultural and Economic Development

In addition to healthcare, Governor Otti touched on achievements in other sectors such as agriculture. He noted the successful recovery of palm, rubber, and cocoa plantations previously concessioned to private entities, which are now contributing to the state’s economic stability and growth.
