Lagos Distributes 20,000 Food Bags to Religious Groups

Relief Distribution Begins Amid Economic Hardship

The Lagos State Government has commenced the distribution of 20,000 food bags to religious organisations across the state. The Ministry of Home Affairs leads this initiative to help alleviate the current economic challenges faced by residents. Distribution started Wednesday, shortly after protests erupted due to widespread hardship in Lagos. Similar unrest has affected other parts of Nigeria.

Targeted Relief for Muslim and Christian Communities

The state government allocated 10,000 bags to Muslim communities and an equal number to Christian organisations. Each bag contains essential food items, including 10kg of rice, 5kg of beans, and 5kg of garri. Representatives from various religious groups gathered at the Lagos State Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, to receive the palliatives during the distribution event.

Government’s Commitment to Alleviating Hardship

Abdullahi Jebe, Special Adviser on Religion (Islamic), highlighted Governor Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to support various sectors of society. He explained that the distribution, delayed by recent protests, continues the government’s commitment to providing relief. The focus remains on assisting the most affected communities. The distribution will continue over the coming days, reaching additional religious organisations.

Christian Groups Receive Palliatives

Adebukola Adeleke, Special Adviser on Religion (Christian), confirmed the start of distributing 10,000 food bags to Christian organisations. The “Ounje Eko” initiative targets Christian groups in all 20 Local Governments. It also reaches 37 Local Council Development Areas across Lagos.. The effort is part of the state’s broader strategy to mitigate the impact of economic difficulties on its residents.

Centralised Distribution for Efficiency

Adewunmi Ogunsanya, Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs, praised the governor’s initiative and explained how the distribution is carefully organised to ensure efficiency. The centralised distribution at the Lagos State Auditorium allows for orderly and effective delivery to 94 Islamic organisations, including NASFAT. Ogunsanya emphasised that this initiative supports the less privileged across all sectors of Lagos society.

Governor’s Advisory Council Plays Key Role

The Governor’s Advisory Council, created to oversee state relief efforts, extended its work by distributing these food items. Their recommendations have guided the distribution process effectively. This ensures the palliatives reach those most in need. This ongoing initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to easing the burden on Lagosians during these challenging times.
