Abia Health and Infrastructure Initiatives Underway

Revamping Primary Health Centres

The Abia State Government has announced ambitious plans to renovate and retrofit 200 primary health centres across the state by the end of this year. Okey Kanu, the state Commissioner for Information, stated that this initiative will commence in the first week of September and aims to complete the projects by December, significantly boosting local healthcare in time for the holiday season.

Enhanced Healthcare for All Wards

During a press briefing, Commissioner Kanu emphasized that every one of the 184 wards in the state would benefit from this extensive project. This initiative will serve as a substantial “Christmas gift” to the citizens of Abia, demonstrating the state’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality.

Public School Land Recovery

In addition to healthcare improvements, the state has initiated a recovery program to reclaim public lands that have been illegally acquired. A focused committee has already begun operations, starting with the retrieval of lands from Government College Umuahia. This move is part of a broader effort to reclaim and properly utilise school lands for educational development.

Infrastructure Development on the Horizon

Kanu also highlighted that the state has actively maintained and rehabilitated 108 roads through direct labour as part of ongoing road infrastructure efforts. The state is also progressing with major road projects, including the Ntigha – Mbawsi – Umuala Road, with plans to enhance connectivity and transportation across the state.

Educational Reforms and Teacher Training

The state is not only focusing on physical infrastructure but also on educational reforms. Verification of private schools and extensive training for teachers are underway, aimed at elevating the quality of education provided to students across Abia.
