Gunmen Attack Benue Communities, Six Killed

Six Killed in Benue Attacks

On August 25, 2024, armed herders attacked two communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing six people. The incidents, which occurred on Friday, targeted Iwari and Olegagbane communities, according to local sources.

Details of the Attacks

A resident named Adayi reported that attackers killed one person in Iwari during the first assault. The assailants then moved to Olegagbane, where they claimed five more lives. The attacks involved violence and looting, which heightened fear and insecurity in the affected areas.

Local Government Reacts

Phillip Ebenyakwu, Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, confirmed the attacks and voiced his concerns about the persistent violence in the region. He described the situation as distressing, highlighting the attackers’ actions of killing, stealing, and looting before fleeing. Ebenyakwu is in communication with security agencies to address the escalating violence.

Displacement and Humanitarian Concerns

The violence has led to the displacement of over 2,000 people from several villages. The Chairman noted that while the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has provided some relief materials, they are insufficient to meet the needs of the displaced individuals. The ongoing crisis has overwhelmed local resources and support systems.

Security Response and Challenges

The state police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, was unavailable for comment on the incidents. The lack of immediate security response has raised concerns among residents and local officials about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing the violence.

Community’s Growing Fear

As the violence continues, the communities in Benue State are grappling with fear and uncertainty. The repeated attacks by armed herders have intensified local tensions and raised questions about the security measures in place. The situation remains dire as residents call for stronger interventions to restore peace and safety in their communities.
