Governor Peter Mbah renames Obinagu Road in Enugu to Mike Ejeagha Road

Enugu, Nigeria – In a significant and heartwarming event, the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has officially renamed the iconic Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike, Enugu, to Mike Ejeagha Road. This move honours the legendary Igbo folk musician, Chief Mike Ejeagha, who has been a pivotal figure in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people through his music.

Earlier this year, in February, Governor Mbah directed the Ministry of Works to undertake the reconstruction of the dilapidated Obinagu Road, including the adjoining streets leading to the residence of Chief Mike Ejeagha. This initiative was not only a gift ahead of the music icon’s 94th birthday but also a precursor to the much-anticipated ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ rave. The government’s action underscores its commitment to celebrating and preserving the contributions of living legends like Chief Ejeagha, who has significantly influenced the cultural landscape of Enugu and beyond.

Today’s event, marking the commissioning and renaming of the road, was filled with emotion and pride as Governor Mbah acknowledged the deep impact of Chief Mike Ejeagha’s work. “Our administration purposefully rebuilt this road earlier in the year to honour our folk music legend and for the benefit of Ndi Enugu,” Governor Mbah stated. “We are grateful to God for a day such as this, on which a living legend is honoured while he is still among us.”

Furthermore, the Enugu State Government has committed to assuming full responsibility for the upkeep of Chief Mike Ejeagha, ensuring that he continues to live comfortably in his later years. This gesture highlights the government’s recognition of the invaluable contributions of cultural icons and its dedication to ensuring their legacies endure.
