Justice for All Nations
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan defended his decision to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant. During a BBC interview, Khan stressed the need for equal application of justice to all nations. He highlighted that justice must be served impartially, regardless of a country’s political influence. Khan explained that the ICC must remain consistent in its pursuit of international law. He defended the court’s actions as necessary to maintain credibility and fairness. Netanyahu and Gallant face charges linked to alleged war crimes during the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Equal Standards for All
Khan emphasized the need for the ICC to hold both Israeli and Hamas leaders accountable for alleged war crimes during the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. He announced that the court requested arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders, two of whom were later killed. This, he argued, demonstrates the court’s commitment to applying the law uniformly, avoiding accusations of bias.
Charges Against Israeli and Hamas Leaders
The prosecutor cited evidence supporting charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, extermination, and targeting civilians. Prosecutors have accused Netanyahu and Gallant of using starvation as a method of warfare, while accusing Hamas leaders of extermination, murder, and torture. Both Israeli and Hamas officials have denied the allegations.
Opposition and Global Reactions
The warrants have sparked global reactions, with US President Joe Biden calling the application against Israeli leaders “outrageous.” However, Khan remained firm, explaining that he had reviewed the evidence, which remains confidential, unlike the public criticisms made by officials. He also welcomed the UK’s new government decision to drop its opposition to the warrants.
Political Pressures and Resistance
Khan revealed that he faced significant pressure from world leaders to refrain from issuing warrants, yet he remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice. He emphasized that the ICC must apply the law equally, regardless of whether the accused are backed by powerful nations, to maintain its credibility.
Putin and Global Accountability
In the same interview, Khan discussed other high-profile cases, including the arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Despite Putin’s recent visit to Mongolia, an ICC signatory, the arrest did not take place. Khan firmly stated his belief that justice will eventually be served, since political power is never permanent.
