Peter Obi Clarifies Interview Misinterpretation

Addresses Misrepresentation and Focuses on Nigeria’s Immediate Needs

Peter Obi has addressed concerns and misrepresentations arising from a recent interview he granted to News Central TV. The former governor expressed surprise over how some “fifth columnists” have distorted his words, emphasizing his primary focus on alleviating the suffering of Nigerians rather than engaging in premature political campaigns for the 2027 elections.

Prioritizing Current Challenges Over Future Elections

“I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges,” Obi stated. He underscored the importance of addressing the nation’s immediate issues before concerning himself with future electoral ambitions.

Open to Collaboration with Shared Vision

When questioned about potential collaborations, Obi clarified his openness to working with others who share his vision for Nigeria’s progress. “I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided they do not center their intentions on state capture.” I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress,” he said.

Firm Commitment to the Labour Party

Obi reaffirmed his dedication to the Labour Party, noting that any potential alliances must be transparent about their true intentions. “I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions,” he asserted.

Not Desperate for Position, but Determined to See Nigeria Work

“As I have always maintained, I am not desperate to become president, but I am determined to see Nigeria work,” Obi declared. He emphasized that he is not seeking any position for personal gain and believes he can contribute to the nation’s development without holding office. “I can make contributions as I am already doing without occupying any position,” he added.

Clarifying Misrepresented Statements

Obi expressed his surprise that people have misrepresented his words, making it clear that he never stated he would accept a vice-presidential position. “My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised that people have misrepresented my words,” he said. For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone, and it’s unequivocal,” he emphasized. He concluded by reiterating his commitment to working with those dedicated to building a new Nigeria.
