Sowore Arrested Upon Arrival in Nigeria, Passport Seized

Sowore Arrested at Lagos Airport

Nigerian authorities arrested Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, upon his Sunday arrival in Lagos. Immigration officials detained him at Murtala Muhammad International Airport. He had just disembarked from a flight originating in the United States. His arrest followed orders from higher authorities, sparking widespread reactions.

Arrest Follows DSS Memo Leak

Sowore’s arrest followed a leaked memo from the Department of State Services (DSS), dated 12 September 2024, ordering his detention upon arrival in the country. The memo raised speculation ahead of his flight, and upon landing, his arrest was promptly carried out by Nigerian Immigration officials.

Sowore’s Passport Confiscated

Sowore revealed on his official X account that authorities confiscated his international passport. He stated, “Nigerian Immigration seized my passport and informed me I was to be detained under orders.”

Sowore Accuses Government of Clampdown

Sowore accused the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, of attempting to silence dissent. He linked his arrest to the upcoming “Fearless in October” protests, aimed at challenging what he describes as the regime’s tyranny and oppression.

Protest Planned for October 1st

Sowore urged Nigerians to resist the government’s crackdown by joining nationwide protests beginning on October 1st. He encouraged citizens to stand against tyranny using all acceptable means. His call to action highlighted the increasing political unrest within the country. Sowore emphasized the importance of united efforts to challenge the government’s oppressive actions. The planned protests aim to address widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies.

DSS Yet to Comment

As of now, the DSS has not commented on Sowore’s detention. His supporters have called for his immediate release, with tensions mounting ahead of the planned protests. This arrest marks another chapter in Sowore’s longstanding battle with the Nigerian government.
