Floods in Maiduguri Heighten Disease Risks
The Nigerian Medical Association has warned of disease outbreaks after last week’s catastrophic floods in Maiduguri, Borno State. Dr. El-Yakub Yakubu Mohammed urged the government and key stakeholders to take immediate action. He emphasised the urgent need for intervention to prevent a looming public health crisis. The NMA is calling for increased support to address the health risks caused by the floods. Thousands of residents have been displaced, creating conditions ripe for the spread of water-borne diseases.
Dire Conditions in IDP Camps
Dr. El-Yakub pointed out that Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council are experiencing overcrowding, lack of clean water, and poor sanitation facilities. These conditions significantly increase the risk of outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, malaria, and other water-borne and vector-borne illnesses. The NMA has urged for a swift response to contain these potential health threats.
Government Urged to Intervene Swiftly
The NMA chairman emphasised the need for immediate government intervention to prevent a public health disaster. Dr. El-Yakub stressed the need for swift government intervention to deploy more healthcare resources and strengthen disease surveillance. He urged the government to implement adequate preventive measures immediately. The health and well-being of thousands in affected areas rely on quick, decisive action.
Healthcare Resources Needed in Camps
To mitigate the looming health risks, Dr. El-Yakub stressed the importance of bolstering healthcare resources in the affected areas. He urged the government to prioritise healthcare access for displaced individuals, provide clean water, and improve sanitation services in the camps. The NMA has pledged to offer its full support in tackling the situation, and medical professionals have been encouraged to prepare for deployment to the camps.
Disease Surveillance and Preventive Measures Critical
Dr. El-Yakub emphasised the importance of improving disease surveillance and monitoring to detect outbreaks quickly. He urged the government to supply essential medical resources promptly. He also called for preventive measures like vaccinations and mosquito nets to protect displaced people from infectious diseases.
NMA Mobilises Medical Support
The NMA has committed to mobilising its members to assist in the affected areas, with Dr. El-Yakub urging medical professionals to be ready to offer their expertise. As Maiduguri faces the possibility of a public health emergency, the NMA’s call for coordinated action is critical to avoiding a major disease outbreak in the wake of the devastating floods.
