Historic Decision by Teamsters Union
For the first time since 1996, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the most powerful labour unions in the US, has declined to endorse a presidential candidate. Representing 1.3 million members across the US and Canada, the union stated that neither Kamala Harris nor Donald Trump had made strong commitments to addressing the key concerns of their workers. This decision comes less than 50 days before election night, marking a major moment in the race for working-class voters.
Polling Reveals Divided Union Membership
The union’s leadership revealed that internal polling showed a lack of definitive support for either candidate. While some polls conducted by the Teamsters indicated strong backing for Trump, with 59.6% support in one survey, the union chose to remain neutral. Despite Trump’s polling advantage, the union’s decision to stay neutral is seen as a blow to both campaigns, especially Harris’s effort to secure working-class votes in crucial swing states.
Teamsters Leadership Split on Endorsement
Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters General President, has made headlines for engaging with both Republicans and Democrats, sparking internal debates within the union. While O’Brien met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate and participated in a roundtable discussion with the union’s executive board, he has also maintained ties with the Biden administration. His outreach to populist Republican figures and his address at the Republican National Convention fuelled speculation about the union’s political alignment.
Harris Campaign Reacts to Union’s Decision
Following the union’s announcement, the Harris campaign responded by highlighting its broad support from organised labour. Harris’s spokesperson, Lauren Hitt, noted that while the union’s leadership may have withheld an endorsement, many of its regional councils and members remain firmly behind her. Hitt pointed out that Harris has consistently supported organised labour throughout her career, contrasting her stance with Trump’s comments on firing striking workers.
Labour Unions and Political Influence
The Teamsters union has long played a significant role in US elections, particularly in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. While the union’s neutrality might seem like a missed opportunity for Harris, the divided support within its ranks reflects broader tensions in the American labour movement. Many workers are grappling with the economic policies of both candidates and how they will impact the future of unions in the US.
Impact on Election Campaigns
The Teamsters’ decision not to endorse a candidate this year adds an interesting dynamic to the 2024 presidential election. Both campaigns had hoped to leverage the union’s support to energise voters in key states. Without the union’s formal backing, it remains to be seen how the lack of endorsement will influence voter turnout among its 1.3 million members.
