Hospital Staff Warned Against Crypto Activities
The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe has officially banned its staff from engaging in cryptocurrency trading during work hours. In a circular dated September 18, 2024, the hospital’s Deputy Director of Administration, Adamu Tela, announced this decision. The hospital management decided to act after patients and their relatives repeatedly complained about staff members being distracted by crypto trading, which reportedly impacted their duties.
Impact on Patient Care Highlighted
The hospital management reported that staff members engaged in cryptocurrency trading, causing lapses in patient care by neglecting their responsibilities. The hospital emphasised that such distractions during working hours interfere with staff performance and ultimately affect the quality of care provided to patients.
Strict Enforcement of the Ban
In the circular, Tela warned staff that strict disciplinary actions would follow if they were caught mining or trading cryptocurrencies during work hours. The hospital will enforce compliance by deploying monitoring officers from SERVICOM, ACTU, and security teams throughout the facility to ensure the ban is upheld.
Popular Crypto Activities Among Staff
Cryptocurrency trading has surged in popularity across Nigeria, particularly during economic challenges. Many people have turned to mobile apps to earn digital tokens, and hospital staff reportedly engaged in popular crypto mining games like Dogs, TapSwap, Blum, and Hamster. The management, however, made it clear that such activities are inappropriate during work hours and must cease immediately.
Growing Popularity of Crypto in Nigeria
The rise of cryptocurrency activities in Nigeria comes as citizens seek alternative sources of income during difficult economic times. However, the hospital’s decision reflects a broader concern over the impact of these activities on essential services like healthcare. While cryptocurrency may offer economic benefits, the hospital has drawn a firm line between these activities and workplace responsibilities.
Ensuring Accountability and Patient Safety
With the ban in place, Gombe Teaching Hospital is taking measures to prioritise patient care and uphold public service standards. The management’s strict stance aims to address patient concerns and ensure that staff members remain dedicated to their duties without the distractions of cryptocurrency trading during working hours.
