Missing INEC Result Sheet Halts Voting in Orhionmwon

Voting was suspended at Orhionmwon Ward 8, Unit 1, in Edo State after voters refused to proceed due to the absence of the official result sheet from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Voters expressed frustration, stating that without the result sheet, the election process would lack transparency and fairness. This development occurred during the ongoing Edo gubernatorial election, raising concerns about the integrity of the election.

Voters Demand Accountability from INEC

A video on X shows Orhionmwon Ward 8 voters expressing anger over INEC’s failure to provide a result sheet. Voters argued that without the result sheet, the election process could be compromised. They raised concerns about potential tampering and insisted that voting would not continue. The voters demanded immediate action from INEC to resolve the issue before proceeding with the election. This disruption has added to the challenges already faced during the election.

Edo REC Assures Free and Fair Election

Despite the halt in voting, the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Anugbum Onuoha, reassured the public of INEC’s commitment to conducting a free and fair election. He emphasised that the electoral process would remain impartial and transparent, stating, “I am competent to handle this election. I challenge any political party to tell me where I’ve gone wrong so far.” Onuoha’s remarks were aimed at quelling fears and restoring confidence in the election process.

INEC’s Transparency Questioned by Voters

Orhionmwon voters remain sceptical of INEC’s assurances, claiming the missing result sheet compromises the voting process’s integrity. They emphasised that the result sheet is essential for accurately recording the official vote count. Its absence has raised suspicions among voters, who fear the election could be manipulated. Voter protests in the ward reflect growing concern about the fairness of the electoral system in Edo State.
