A large group of women from Kogi State took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The protesters accused the agency of unfairly persecuting the former governor of the state, Yahaya Bello. The women claimed that Bello did more for the state than any previous governor and deserves fair treatment from the EFCC.
Calls for President Tinubu’s Intervention
Led by community leaders and loyalists of the former governor, the women called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene. They urged the President to instruct the EFCC to allow the courts to handle any allegations against Bello without bias. The women insisted that the EFCC’s actions were politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing the former governor’s reputation.
Allegations of Political Witch-Hunt
The women denounced the EFCC’s recent activities, describing them as a witch-hunt designed to destroy Yahaya Bello’s political future. They referred to the agency’s actions on Wednesday, which included a raid on the former governor’s residence, as evidence of a vendetta. Hajiya Halima Abass declared, “We stand with our leader and believe he’s being targeted unfairly.”
Protesters Defend Yahaya Bello’s Legacy
Throughout the protest, the women highlighted Yahaya Bello’s contributions to Kogi State during his tenure. They insisted that the former governor’s policies and programmes had significantly improved the state’s welfare. Ebiraland leader Hajiya Fatima stated, “We value Yahaya Bello’s work as governor, and we refuse to watch him be persecuted.”
Demands for Justice and Fairness
Protesters chanted slogans in their local dialects, demanding the EFCC handle the case professionally without political interference. They insisted the agency should not succumb to political pressure. The protesters warned they would continue demonstrating until justice is served. They urged other Kogi residents to join their movement in support of Yahaya Bello.
Protesters Urge the EFCC to Focus on Corruption Cases
Several of the women argued that the EFCC should focus on real corruption cases instead of pursuing political vendettas. Protest organiser Mrs Boluwaji urged the EFCC to focus on genuine corruption cases instead of launching a political witch-hunt.
