Lawlessness in Edo Election as Obaseki Condemns Conduct

Obaseki Denounces Election Process

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has criticised the conduct of the recent governorship election, describing it as marred by a blatant disregard for processes and the rule of law. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner, with 291,667 votes, defeating the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who polled 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, who secured 22,761 votes.

Governor Appeals for Calm

In a statewide address, Obaseki urged Edo residents to remain calm in the face of the election outcome. He emphasised that despite the feelings of anger and disappointment among voters, violence and destruction of property should not be the response. Instead, he encouraged those aggrieved to seek legal recourse, stressing that peace and justice will prevail.

Disillusionment Over Election Results

Obaseki acknowledged the disheartenment of Edo citizens following the election. He described the outcome as a tragedy for democracy, where the power to choose leaders was taken from the people. Obaseki expressed empathy for those feeling powerless, particularly given the role of institutions that should protect the electorate but failed to uphold democratic principles.

Peace and Legal Channels Urged

The governor further called on the people of Edo to explore peaceful solutions, emphasising the importance of the judicial process in resolving disputes. He reminded the citizens that democracy offers safeguards for addressing grievances, and this should be the preferred path rather than resorting to violence or unlawful actions.

Impunity During Election Criticised

Obaseki didn’t hold back in his condemnation of the conduct of the election, noting the impunity and disregard for legal processes that were evident. He pointed out that many observers raised concerns about the conduct of the election, and these issues should be addressed through appropriate channels. He appealed to those affected to remain calm and trust the judicial system.
