Burkina Faso Foils Coup Plot, Names Individuals Involved

Government Unveils Coup Plotters

Burkina Faso’s military government has foiled an elaborate coup plot, aimed at destabilising the country, the nation’s Security Minister Mahamadou Sana announced on Monday. The plot was orchestrated by 14 individuals, including the leader of the January 2022 coup, Ahmed Kinda. The conspirators, residing in Côte d’Ivoire and Niger, allegedly worked with armed groups and Western intelligence officers to carry out the attack.

Key Figures Behind the Conspiracy

Among the 14 individuals named in the coup attempt were former commanders, two ex-ministers, and journalists. The Security Minister emphasised that these individuals planned the coup from abroad, funding and training militants to execute their plans. Sana expressed the government’s commitment to holding these conspirators accountable, with ongoing investigations to track down all those involved.

Three-Phased Coup Plot Exposed

Sana outlined the coup plot’s three phases, revealing that the first phase had already led to a devastating Jihadi attack that killed over 100 civilians in central Burkina Faso. The second phase aimed at attacking key locations, including the presidential palace, a military drone base, and an airport. The final phase planned to destabilise the country further through attacks near the Ivory Coast border.

Government Response to Coup Threat

In response to the coup plot, the government has launched a special anti-terrorist operation aimed at neutralising any remaining threats. Sana assured the nation that security forces are working diligently to ensure that no further destabilisation attempts succeed, and he urged citizens to remain vigilant during this period.

Families Urged to Distance Themselves from Plotters

In a firm message to the families of those involved, Sana urged them to denounce the actions of their relatives. He warned that the government would not tolerate further subversive activities and that those involved in destabilisation attempts would face severe consequences.
