Protesters Urges Security for October 1 Protest

Organisers Request Police Protection for Protest

The #EndBadGovernance Movement has requested that the Lagos State Police Command provide security for their planned October 1, 2024, protest. At a press conference in Ogba, Lagos, the organisers stressed the importance of a peaceful demonstration. They urged law enforcement to protect the protesters’ rights. The organisers highlighted the need for police cooperation to ensure a secure protest environment.

Protest to Highlight Economic Hardship

The upcoming protest seeks to highlight Nigeria’s persistent economic issues, such as fuel price hikes, rising electricity tariffs, and inflation. Activist groups supporting the movement encourage Nigerians to join and voice their frustrations. They urge citizens to protest the government’s failure to address previous demands. The protest organisers believe collective action can bring much-needed attention to these ongoing economic hardships.

Concerns Over Safety Raised

In response to a letter from the Lagos State Police, the organisers proposed a virtual meeting to discuss the protest, citing concerns that key members are currently outside Lagos. The group is keen to ensure a peaceful demonstration and hopes the police will fulfil their duty to protect protesters as mandated under the Police Establishment Act.

Previous Protests Met with Arrests

The organisers noted that police arrested several demonstrators during their August protests, with some leaders facing treason charges. The group asserts that, despite these arrests, the government has not met any of their demands from the “10 days of rage” protest. They highlighted that fuel prices have continued to rise, further increasing the financial burden on everyday Nigerians.

Calls for Release of Detained Protesters

The #EndBadGovernance Movement also called for the immediate release of detained activists, including #EndSARS protesters and journalists arrested for exercising their rights. The movement maintains that the October protest will be peaceful and that participants should not face intimidation or arrest.
