Death Toll Rises to 15 in Ebonyi Cholera Outbreak
The cholera outbreak in Ebonyi State has claimed 15 lives, according to the state government. The outbreak, which has devastated Ndibokote Village in the Ezza-Inyimegu community, prompted swift action from health authorities. Moses Ekuma, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed the rising death toll to reporters in Abakaliki on Friday. In response, three emergency treatment centres have been set up to manage the increasing number of patients affected by the disease.
Health Authorities Mobilise Emergency Response
The state government, in collaboration with local health agencies, has established emergency centres aimed at treating those infected. These facilities are strategically located to handle the most urgent cases and contain the outbreak. The Commissioner for Health expressed concern over the rapid spread of cholera in the community and stressed the importance of swift action to prevent further loss of life.
Local Government Chair Calls for Action
During a visit to the affected community, Steven Nwankpa, the Chairperson of Izzi Local Government Area, urged residents to adopt better hygiene practices. He emphasised the need to halt open defecation, which has been linked to the spread of the disease. Nwankpa also recommended postponing burial ceremonies to limit large gatherings that could exacerbate the spread of cholera during this critical period.
Cholera Outbreak Linked to Poor Sanitation
Health officials believe poor sanitation practices, particularly open defecation, have contributed significantly to the spread of cholera in the area. Efforts to raise public awareness about the dangers of these practices have been intensified, with local leaders urging the community to comply with sanitation guidelines to curb further infections. The outbreak has highlighted the urgent need for improved sanitation infrastructure in rural areas.
Statewide Cholera Control Measures
In response to the escalating crisis, the Ebonyi State Government has intensified its efforts to contain the outbreak. Alongside setting up treatment centres, the government is working to educate the public about the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation. Mobile health units are also being deployed to provide medical assistance and raise awareness about how to prevent cholera in vulnerable communities.
Hope for Control Amid Rising Cases
As the death toll continues to rise, officials remain hopeful that the emergency measures will curb the outbreak. With increased public health awareness and improved sanitation efforts, authorities are optimistic that the disease can be contained before more lives are lost. However, they stress that cooperation from the community is essential for these efforts to succeed.
